Day 1
- Depart London for Medieval Caerleon, rumoured to have been one of Arthur’s courts, with its Roman amphitheatre and Castle. Ffwrrwm Arts and Crafts Centre, run by an authoritative Arthurian expert, with craft shops, wooden carvings detailing the tales of King Arthur and the only collection of wooden Arthurian thrones in the world. Cross back into England and into the elegant Georgian town of Bath with its Roman baths, pump and Assembly rooms and healing spa waters. Arthur’s twelfth and final victory over the Saxons, the Battle of Mount Badon, is believed to have taken place at Little Solsbury Hill near Bath. The site was called Mons Badonicus in early times, and in the Middle ges what was said to have been Arthur’s skeleton was reportedly found there. Dinner and overnight accommodation in Cornwall.
Day 2 - Into Cornwall, which was part of the kingdom of Dumnonia in Arthurian times. Visit Marazion and follow the ‘Arthur trail’ for the lost kingdom of Lyonesse. This mythical land is traditionally the home of Tristan and Sir Galahad, and some legends place Arthur’s last battle here, claiming that his wicked son, Mordred, drove Arthur’s failing troops into the sea, only then to be defeated himself by Merlin. On to St Michael’s Mount. Dinner and overnight accommodation in Cornwall.
Day 3 - Visit King Arthur’s Great Halls and the world-famous 72 stained-glass window display which depicts the deeds of the Knights of the Round Table. Listen as Merlin takes you on a journey through time, enabling visitors to experience the Granite Throne, the Sword in the Stone and the Round Table, and watch the Electronic Show detailing the tragic romance of King Arthur, Queen Guinevere and Sir Lancelot. The impressive ruins of Tintagel Castle, the site of Merlin’s cave, and the shape in the ground known as Arthur’s Footprint. The castle is traditionally believed to be Arthur’s birthplace and the place where his parents met, and is believed to be haunted by Merlin the Magician. Halt for typical English tea and scones. Dinner and overnight accommodation in Cornwall.
Day 4 - Glastonbury, where Queen Guinevere was reportedly held prisoner by the knight Melwas, which was identified as the true Avalon in the romance Perlesvaus, and which claims Joseph of Arimathea as the founder of its first Christian settlement. Visit the beautiful Abbey and see the graves of Arthur and Guinevere, the Chalice Well and take part in the Glastonbury Tour. Castle Cadbury, legendarily the site of Arthur’s court at Camelot, the beautiful village of Queen Camel and Pomparles Bridge, which English legend believes is the place where Arthur threw Excalibur into the waters. The city of Winchester, which has also been identified with Camelot, perhaps because of the symbolic Round Table in Winchester Castle. Mysterious, ancient Stonehenge, still the site of much Druidic activity today. Arthurian legend says that Stonehenge was brought from Ireland at the suggestion of Merlin to be used as a memorial for the dead. Visit Avebury and its Stone Circle before returning to London.
