His lyrical celebration of the countryside over the town, and an England that was disappearing when he wrote, contrasts sharply with his contemporary concerns, such as social domination by the rich over the lower classes, the more negative aspects of education and religion, and the appearance of an overt acceptance of blatant sexuality in an otherwise rigid Victorian world controlled by protocol.
