Danny S. Parker has been a student of the Second World War in Europe for over thirty years. From 1975 - 1978 he researched and designed two simulation games covering the German offensives through the region, both in 1940 and 1944: Battles for the Ardennes and Dark December. From 1983 - 1987 he assisted Charles B. MacDonald, the former deputy chief at the office of military history, in research for his book, A Time for Trumpets. From 1987 - 1988 he worked as a researcher in preparation of a study on the Ardennes Campaign for the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon. He also conducted several tours with veterans through the region in Belgium and Luxembourg as well as visited that area on numerous occasions to continue his long research. He has also extensively bicycled the region composing a series of then and now photographs.
In addition to numerous magazine articles concerning the conflict, from 1987 to 1991, Mr. Parker researched and wrote Battle of the Bulge, a well-received account now available in a new 60th anniversary edition. This was followed by the first detailed study of the air war during the campaign, To Win the Winter Sky, published in 1994. In 1997 he edited a successful volume, Hitler’s Ardennes Offensive: The German View of the Battle of the Bulge, detailing German perspective on the fighting. A second book in the same series appeared in 1999. Long interested both in military history and engineering, for the last 12 years Mr. Parker has researched comprehensive account of Jochen Peiper, the Malmedy massacre and the U.S. forces who fought the 1.SS Panzer Division in the Ardennes. Beyond months of research in U.S. and German archives, this effort has included many trips around the U.S. and Europe to interview over 200 participants in the historical events. The book is to be published by DaCapo Press in 2008.
